The Bates Motel is filling up. My cousin, Leannah, and her daughter, Adrienne, are visiting for a few days from Houston. They arrived this morning after spending some time in Eugene and Florence. Adrienne attends an arts magnet school in Houston just like Sarah and Emily do her, so that's pretty cool.
They arrived just in time for lunch so the whole group of us piled into the car and went out for Indian cuisine. We ate at a cute little restaurant called Swagat that was once a little house. They offer a very reasonably priced lunch buffet with excellent food, and a lovely decor. Even the roses in front greeted us with full blooms.
Leannah wanted to go to a yarn shop she'd heard about called Yarnia (cute, huh?). Their claim to fame is that you can make your own yarn to order. Customers choose their own fibers and a machine binds them together into a yarn. Colors, textures, wool, silk, bamboo - your choice. Pretty unique idea.
We walked around the corner from Yarnia and found a cute little neighborhood coffee shop owned by a Croatian immigrant. Jeff asked him about making cappuccino and he made him a "perfect cappuccino" - gratis. While we were waiting for our coffee, we suddenly heard the most beautiful violin music from a table in the rear. I glanced over and there was a little old man (from Napoli, we learned) playing the violin. After each number, we'd all clap, and he'd stand up and bow. A few minutes later, he'd play again. I felt like we were in a little coffee shop in Italy.
We weren't in Italy, but an area of Portland called the Hawthorne District, a funky, bohemian area of shops and neighborhood restaurants. We'll strolled up and down for a while checking out the different stores. Adrienne was especially taken with the shops featuring vintage clothing and international imports.
By the way, I just want to observe that Jeff and Leannah are bonding this evening in my kitchen. Jeff is cracking the whip over my need to blog :-) and volunteered to cook so I could get to it. He and Lee are making pimiento cheese, and a breakfast casserole for tomorrow morning. These are my kinds of guests! I could get spoiled...
