Florida flora and fauna - say that fast five times!

On the way home one day, we visited Big Tree Park in Longwood, just outside Orlando.

This park is named for a Cypress tree, "The Senator", estimated to be 3500 years old.

A sister tree, "Lady Liberty", just a few paces beyond, is pretty impressive, as well, though only 2,000 years old. What a baby!

Also impressive: the mosquitoes. Swampy land, yes, and those bloodsuckers found us quickly. We stayed only long enough to take pictures.

Interestingly, we had spent a few hours at the Orlando Science Center on LeakyCon's registration day, and thanks to reciprocity with OMSI, it didn't coat us a thing.  :-)  Of all the things we saw and did, I was most impressed with their realistic depiction of a Florida swamp, complete with huge cypress trees. Nice that we got to compare the replica with a time-worn example of the real thing.

Animal life included fish, snakes, turtles, alligators, and a quite photogenic stingray.

In the gift shop, Larry found his playful side...

Before we left, I couldn't resist some shots of the Spanish-moss draped oaks in front of the museum. Lovely!

I love the trees we have in Oregon, but I'll always have a place in my heart for big, moss-covered stately oak trees...
