Sewing Class Projects - Completed!

Emily started her summer by spending three days in a sewing class, and came home with some very nice finished projects.

Students were assigned a required project to sew on the first day, I assume to help them get accustomed to the machines, and to show the teacher what they could do. Emily made an reusable lunch bag, stuffed with batting, and featuring a Velcro closure and coordinating fabrics inside and out. It even has a pocket inside that will hold a blue ice pack. Pretty cool! (Pun totally intended!!)

  

The second day featured a project chosen to help Emily master tight curves - a precursor to such things as sleeves, facings, collars, necklines, etc. To achieve that end, she made a floppy-eared, stuffed bunny. She chose a soft white flannel with polka dots and a coordinating ribbon to go around the neck. Stuffed with batting, it's very cuddly!

 

Day three brought a wearable item into play, as Emily decided to make another skirt to add to her wardrobe. This one is a little dressier than her previous skirts, and required a zipper and darts - both firsts for her. It's been a while since I've put in a zipper, so I'm thrilled she had an expert seamstress teaching her that skill. I love the fabric she chose, and her finished product is very nicely done. Looks professional, doesn't it?

  

We're still deciding whether to sign her up for another class later in the summer. In the meantime, she has some items here to be proud of, and some new skills to apply on her own when she's ready. Keep it up, Emily! You're doing great!

Emily's New Skirt

As I drive Emily to her sewing classes this week, it occurs to me that I never posted pictures of her latest skirt. She used the same pattern as before, but with different fabric and elastic band color, it's a totally new addition to her wardrobe.

Sassy heels were a bargain at Goodwill(!), and make for a perfect teen combination.

 

She tells me that classmates have asked her to make skirts for them. Hmm... Might we have a new business opportunity on the horizon?

Emily's still sewing...

A couple of weeks ago, Emily decided she wanted to make another skirt. Off to the fabric store we went, in search of a pattern and fabric. She'd seen a skirt at Macy's with an elastic waistband, and wanted to model hers after it.

Once home, she got everything cut and measured and started sewing.

   

By the end of the next day, she was done! Completed with a brown top and a cute tan sweater, she put together quite a stylish outfit.

 

I'm so proud of her. Emily gets a vision, starts a project, and sticks with it until she's done. She's worn her skirt to school, and has gotten compliments from her friends. Who needs Macy's?

I can't wait to see what she'll make next!

More sewing projects

Emily finished her latest sewing camp today, and brought home three completed projects. The first is a darling - and handy - drawstring tote bag. It can be worn on one shoulder (Emily's preference) or in the traditional backpack-style. It is not so traditional, however. It sports three pockets on the outside: two square pockets and one just the right size for pencils. Very cute!



Project number two: a pair of pajama pants. Emily decided to make hers shorts, and chose a cow print to coordinate with her collection of cows and cow paraphernalia.



Lastly, she made an apron that is so cute, I'm covetous. I love the coordinating fabrics she chose, and the style is really different. It's simple as can be, just a square turned on end, but what a difference that makes. Now she's all ready to help me out in a serious way in the kitchen!



Hmmm...Guess who will be making her own Halloween costumes in the future?
