Emily's 16th Birthday

On April 24, 2013, Emily turned 16. "Sweet 16" doesn't have the same connotation today that it did when I was growing up, but, somehow, it does still seem to be cause for a special celebration. Or, in Emily's case, two.

As a family, we had dinner at The Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant in downtown Portland, because, honestly, why pass up an opportunity to have fondue? It's not a place we'd go on a regular basis, but is a wonderful spot for a special celebration. There was even a rose waiting for her at our table. What a lovely touch!

But family celebrations here are small, so Emily also had a party with her friends. First, we took them to OMSI for the Mythbusters exhibit. Emily's a big fan, and it was fun to see actual items used in the show.

Emily is also a big fan of sushi. So, from OMSI we headed to Yama Sushi, a Japanese restaurant in the Pearl District. As it turned out, her friends were not the sushi fans we are. We had so many picky eaters, we ended up ordering salads, teriyaki bowls and pretty basic sushi. Still, they wouldn't try anything; even the salad dressing scared them! Good thing we ordered those teriyaki bowls! Those of us who liked sushi were in luck, because we got to eat a lot of it!

After the failed sushi experience, we headed back to the house for gifts and cake. The birthday cake, red velvet, was a hit. Whew!

A pantomime game ended the evening. This, they got into!

Next time, perhaps we should poll the guests about their food preferences. The bottom line, though: Emily had fun. And it was supposed to be all about her.
