Grad Party, Southern Style!

Sarah just graduated from high school. In Oregon. My parents live in Alabama. My mom wanted to give Sarah a graduation party. No, make that a Graduation Party. Capitals all around. I didn't hesitate to accept her offer. There was no question.

My mother has a reputation. And I mean that in the kindest sense. She is known for her parties. Her good parties. Her elegant parties. Her elegant parties with fabulous food. This would be a party to remember.

Wisely, she prepared things that could be done ahead of time and froze them. We ordered some specialty items from Pollman's and Ruth Ann and I helped with those to be made at the last minute. Susan came by the day of the party, brought offerings of her own, and lent a hand setting up and keeping things refilled. Honestly, she was such a big help during the party, that I don't know what we'd have done without her help . Such a good friend!

Finally, the time came. Larry took charge of the mimosas. The dining room table was laid out with a smorgasbord of food: pork roast and pocketbook rolls, savory Mediterranean cheesecake a la Susan, Sweet Little Piggies, chicken salad, pickled vegetables, gorgonzola cheese spread, grapes and cheese, and more that I'm forgetting, I'm sure.

Dessert was in the kitchen: Mama's famous chocolate sheet cake, Susan's lemon squares, Petit Fours from Pollman's (compliments of Aunt Beverly), and strawberries with a sour cream/brown sugar dip. And, of course, a Pollman's cake in Syracuse colors.

The mantle held a display with Sarah's graduation program, diploma, Pathway Endorsement, and senior portraits.

Guests included family members, friends of ours, Mama and Daddy's friends, and neighbors.

Mama and Daddy presented Sarah with her gift: a blue topaz ring that belonged to Mama, now being passed on to Sarah. Mama and Sarah share a special bond: the same birthstone. Their birthdays are one day apart.

Others brought gifts and cards, too, though I didn't capture them all.

As the party wound down, Emily entertained us with her version of Sarah's thank you speech.

Finally, exhausted from all the fun, she collapsed.

And she wasn't alone...

Thanks, Mama, for showing us how parties are done in the South!
